If you watched (or knew someone who watched) Top Chef Las Vegas, you already know who Bryan and Michael Voltaggio are.
The chef brothers, both in their early 30s, battered and deep fried their competition on the reality TV cooking show with innovative cooking techniques and killer flavour profiles and ended up placing a well deserved 1st (Michael) and 2nd place (Bryan). I wanted to eat each and every thing those two made and was depressed when the season ended and I didn’t get my weekly serving of Voltaggio. (more…)

Vancouver Island is a Place to Visit in 2010 – NY Times

On January 10th The New York Times published their 31 places to go in 2010 and Vancouver Island ranked 25th in the world (in between Montenegro and Columbia).
This is yet another great recognition for Vancouver Island, who held the Conde Nast Traveler’s Top North American Island award for nine consecutive years before falling to #2 in 2009. The NY Times focuses on VI’s spectacular west coast hiking trails as a great reason to visit. (more…)

Close to home – Getting to know Vancouver Island

Over the next few months I`ll be focusing my travel and food posts on everything that there is to love about Vancouver Island, British Columbia.
Vancouver Island is a long, narrow island running along side the southern edge of the British Columbia coast, and lives up to BC`s charmingly cocky slogan `The Best Place on Earth`. From the warmest ocean swimming in Canada (and north of California) right here in my home town of Parksville to the incredibly rugged and stunning West Coast Trail along the Pacific Ocean at the very edge of Canada, it`s almost ridiculously beautiful here year-round. Foodie Website of the Day – Roadfood.com

For someone who has been on countless road trips through my life, and eaten road food from terrible (rock hard biscuits and terrifyingly grey gravy) to sublime (the absolute perfect BBQ ribs), Roadfood.com is a revelation.
The website features restaurant reviews of good, bad, but mostly great road food all across America, with a few Canadian locations popping up occasionally. There are frequent great close-up photos of the food accompanying reviews, increasing the drool factor while reading. (more…)
