Snacking in Spain – Barcelona Tapas and Basque Pintxo

Tuesday, June 7th, 2011

Spending two weeks visiting various cities along the Mediterranean coast of Spain in May, I ate a hell of a lot of tapas. In fact, many meals were skipped in favour of a plate filled with these small, appetiser-sized snacks.

There are plenty of places to experience tapas in Spain and chances are, if you’re holding a glass of wine or mug of beer, there’s sure to be a plate of tasty edibles sitting beside it. I tried every single one that was set in front of me or looked interesting on a menu throughout Spain. There were good tapas and bad tapas, greasy deep-fried tapas and weird mystery meat tapas, melt-in-your-mouth tapas and hide-in-your-napkin tapas. (more…)

When cruise food tries too hard – Holland America’s Le Cirque Dining Experience

Tuesday, June 7th, 2011

The way people eat (and expect to eat) on cruise ships has changed quite a bit in the past 15 years, but even the changes (multiple restaurants with different ethnic cuisine, upsold “Higher Quality” dining away from the crowded main dining rooms, etc.) become boring for repeat cruisers. This means that cruise lines are trying to outdo each other with out-of-the-box ways to lure passengers to pay an extra fee for dinner on an already all-inclusive vacation. (more…)

Enjoying the Best of BC Wines at the 2011 Swirl Gala

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

The third annual Parksville Uncorked festival took place on the eastern shores of Vancouver Island this past weekend, and the wine did flow…

Parksville Uncorked began three years ago as a way for local resorts to bring together the best of BC Wines, paired with amazing Vancouver Island food right here in the picturesque oceanside city of Parksville. The weekend-long festival has expanded over the years to include winemakers dinners, bubbly brunches, beer sampling and educational wine seminars. But the jewel in the crown of the festival is still the Swirl gala wine and food tasting, back at the beautiful Beach Club Resort this year to tempt guests with fine wines and fantastic local food. Thanksgiving with The Tran Family

Thursday, November 25th, 2010

I’m a big fan of jumping at cool and unusual ways to to take a trip (as exemplified by this month’s trip to compete on Wipeout Canada in Argentina). Today, on American Thanksgiving, I came across another impulsive traveller like me.

He’s an Australian journalist who has accidentally been getting Thanksgiving email invites and updates from a family in Florida for the past three years, as he shares the same name as a spouse of the family.

A few short days ago, James decided to take one of those fantastic, impulsive travel leaps, and reached out to The Trans to let them know that he wants to join them for Thanksgiving dinner this year.

I recommend watching the entire series of webisodes, I’m only posting the first below. James (and his accent) are adorable and, *spoiler alert*, The Trans are even more adorable and welcome him with open arms. I can’t wait to see how the dinner goes, I’m staying tuned.

Also hoping Martha posts a recipe for her Sage and Sausage stuffing, it sounds tasty!
