The oceans around Parksville and Qualicum Beach, British Columbia are alive and thriving right now. I went exploring yesterday along the French Creek Beach (five minutes from Parksville) to view the herring spawn and bird migration, then away from the ocean up along the banks of French Creek, which are currently swollen to bursting with mountain melt water and the rain of recent storms.

I have posted a series of pictures from the afternoon on the High Tide Travel Blog Facebook Page, click here to view photos and feel free to comment.

For videos of migrating birds and barking sea lions, visit my recent blog post about the Parksville Bird Migration and Herring Spawn.

Happy Spring, everyone!

I’ve been watching comedian Billy Connelly’s incredible television show about his travels east to west along Canada’s Northwest Passage through the Arctic Circle and I cannot recommend it enough.

This is a different view of Canada, the extreme north that we are all proud to have as part of our country, but often know so little about. Billy is both respectful and amusingly irreverent as he travels by boats, planes, motorcycles and helicopters through the Northwest Passage, meeting locals and going to places that most of us will never see with our own eyes. The camera work is particularly spectacular, capturing our Great White North in a completely new way, making me even prouder of our amazing nation.

The series is currently playing on American PBS and is available on DVD.
