Almost time for the Vancouver Island herring spawn
Thursday, February 23rd, 2012
I’ve been seeing more and more sea birds, sea lions and other wildlife arriving on Vancouver Island’s Parksville and Qualicum Beach shoreline ahead of the impending herring spawn that occurs annually in the waters of the Salish Sea.
This is one of my favourite times of year in this part of the West Coast, it’s a facinating look at the maring circle of lifeon the Pacific West Coast, and the Parksville and Qualicum Beach area has a front row seat with wildlife viewing for miles along the shoreline. I’ll be out along the shore and sharing pictures and videos of of my Oceanside travels here on my blog and also on the High Tide Travel Twitter Feed, where I often upload photographs live as I hike around Vancouver Islands trails, beaches and shores.
In the meantime, here’s two videos I shot last spring on the edge of Parksville’s rocky north shore at high tide during the herring spawn:

The fall rainy season has begun on the Island, which means mushroom season has also begun. As you can see from the photos below, there’s lots to see on the forest floor right now, and even a few good things to eat if you know what to look for and how to find it.

Thoughts on the cougar shot near Parksville Beach
Tuesday, September 6th, 2011
I was on my way down to Parksville Beach on Saturday morning for an annual beach volleyball tournament when I abruptly came across a roadblock on the highway. I didn’t think much of it until I saw that the RCMP Officer blocking the road was holding a huge shotgun and there were sounds of shots being fired nearby.
I was both relieved and saddened to hear when I arrived at the beach that a cougar had been discovered in the bushes of a oceanfront resort beside the community beach and was killed by conservation officers. Relieved that no one was hurt, and saddened that a local animal had to be killed. (more…)
