The Full Tilt Canada Cup of Poker begins this Thursday

After a long wait, Full Tilt The Canada Cup of Poker is here, starting tomorrow night on The Score channel across Canada.

In the summer of 2009, 60,000 Canadians competed in a series of regional online freerolls to win a seat in the first annual Full Tilt Canada Cup. This unique event brought together the top 21 players from across Canada to compete in a live team Texas Hold Em Poker tournament. Each team of three represented one area of Canada, players either qualifying for their province of residence or province of birth. Being worried about not only your own play, being on TV and having two other people counting on your every move made for some interesting moments and strategies from playing tight to loose to bizarre.

I was lucky enough to be a spectator at the television studio while they filmed the Canada Cup and I can tell you that it should make for some very entertaining TV. The set was spectacular and the production value was excellent. Playing in teams of three, with one chip stack and one player at the table at a time was hectic and stressful, but made for a fascinating tournament full of twists and turns. The top Canadian team then had the chance to play heads-up against one of three poker pros – Mike Matusow, Andy Bloch and Greg Mueller.

The Full Tilt Canada Cup of Poker television series is scheduled to be shown on The Score in Canada starting Thursday, April 15th and running twice a week (Fridays and Saturdays) thereafter. Tune in to see how far your province makes it.

I am very glad to see an event like this in Canada. It is good for us here, however, I plea to the producers to get dealers who can actually deal and spread the flop. It is painful to watch, and embarrassing for our country. The woman I saw to day not only can’t spread the flop, but she can’t even deal the cards properly. She is throwing them at the players. Having dealt, I know it is not that difficult to deal and spread the flop, so please find some dealers with some skill.

Thanks for your thoughts, Smitty. I was glad to see a tournament like this available for Canadians too. The team that put this program together were great.

Audrey Audet was the dealer for the entire filming, she’s a professional dealer who has worked with this TV production company before and was specifically requested to deal for the Canada Cup.

Although I agree that her style of spreading the flop is not my preferred way to see the cards come down, Audrey kept excellent control of the table, especially in the early rounds when nervous players were making lots of rookie mistakes. I think that any of the 21 players would sing her praises as a dealer throughout the tournament.

    Hey Brady!
The only place I’ve heard of to watch the Canada Cup is the DVDs that some players were mailed (Jay did not receive, did you?). Looks like The Score didn’t negotiate a repeat airing for the show, unfortunatly.
